A colonoscopy is a simple 15-20 minute day procedure that allows Dr Peverelle to examine your large bowel (colon) and a part of the small bowel called the terminal ileum, while you are under light sedation (sleeping). It is considered the gold-standard for diagnosing and managing diseases including:

  • Polyps (benign but pre-cancerous growths)

  • Bowel cancer

  • Diverticulosis

  • Crohn’s disease

  • Ulcerative colitis

Instructions for a special diet and bowel preparation (liquid drinks) will be given to you prior to the procedure.

A colonoscopy is a very safe, routine procedure. Results of the procedure will be discussed with you on the day prior to being discharged.

Advanced Polyp Removal

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) is an advanced polyp removal technique that is performed during colonoscopy for large polyps. Fluid is injected beneath the polyp to lift it from the bowel wall, providing a safer space for removal. Through the scope, a fine metal wire is then looped around the polyp and gently closed until the polyp detaches from the bowel wall. All removed tissue is collected and sent to the laboratory for analysis.

Colonoscopy Preparation

Step 1: Diet (Start 3 Days Before)

Follow a White / Low-Residue Diet to reduce fibre and help clean the bowel.

Allowed: White bread, rice, pasta, chicken, fish, eggs, plain yoghurt.
Avoid: Whole grains, seeds, nuts, fruit/veg (skins/seeds), red/purple foods.

Step 2: Day Before Procedure

Switch to Clear Fluids Only: Water, clear broth, apple juice, black tea/coffee (no milk), electrolyte drinks (avoid red/purple).

Step 3: Bowel Preparation (Plenvu)

Take Plenvu in two doses. Dose 1: Evening before (6pm) + 500ml clear fluids. Dose 2: 4–5 hours before procedure + 500ml clear fluids. Finish all intake 2 hours before your appointment.

Step 4 & 5: Meds & Arrival

Medications: Follow your doctor’s instructions for blood thinners/diabetes meds. On the Day: No solid food. Stop all fluids 2 hours prior. Arrange for someone to drive you home.

Pro Tip: Chill the Plenvu and drink through a straw. A clear or yellow liquid stool indicates you are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a colonoscopy cost in Melbourne?

Costs vary significantly depending on your insurance status and the facility used. For privately insured patients, there is often $0 out-of-pocket cost. For self-funded patients, options are available ranging from approximately $400 to $1,200 depending on the provider.

Is colonoscopy covered by Medicare in Australia?

Medicare provides a rebate for colonoscopies performed in public hospitals or through private specialists if you have a referral. However, private health insurance is often recommended to cover facility and anaesthetist fees to minimise out-of-pocket expenses.

What is the wait time for a colonoscopy in Victoria?

Public hospital waitlists can vary significantly. By choosing private specialist-led care, we can often facilitate an initial consultation and procedure within 2–3 weeks.

How do I book a colonoscopy in Melbourne?

The first step is to obtain a referral from your General Practitioner (GP) or hit the 'Make an Enquiry' button on the home page and we can contact you with instructions. If you have a GP referral, you can contact our clinic to schedule an appointment.

Do I need a GP referral for a colonoscopy?

Yes, a valid referral from your GP is required to see a specialist and to be eligible for Medicare rebates. Please ensure your referral is current before booking.

How long does the procedure take?

The colonoscopy procedure itself typically takes between 15-20 minutes, though you should allow 2–3 hours total for the admission, procedure, and recovery time in the day hospital.

Will I be awake during the procedure?

No. You will be given a sedative or anaesthetic by a specialist anaesthetist. Most patients fall into a light, comfortable sleep and do not remember the procedure afterward.

What are the risks associated with a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a very safe procedure, but as with any medical intervention, there are small risks, such as reaction to sedation, bleeding, or bowel perforation. Your specialist will discuss these with you during your pre-procedure consultation.

Can I drive myself home after the procedure?

No. Due to the effects of the sedation, it is mandatory that you have a responsible adult collect you from the hospital and remain with you for the remainder of the day.

What should I do if I have specific dietary requirements?

Please inform our team at the time of booking. Whether you are diabetic or have other specific health requirements, we will provide you with a tailored preparation plan to ensure your safety and the success of the procedure.
